Wu Tiao Ren, a representative Chinese folk rock band, was founded by Maotao and Renke in 2008. They come from Haifeng, Guangdong province and live in Guangzhou now. The band has four members: Maotao (lead vocal, rhythm guitar), Renke (lead vocal, lead guitar, accordion), Junni (bass), Changjiang (drum). Their first album “A Tale of Haifeng” can be regarded as the milestone of Chinese dialect folk music. Their second album “Some Scenery” broke through the mode of folk style in a sharp way. In 2013, Wu Tiao Ren signed Modernsky. Later, they released two albums “Canton Girl” and “Dreamy Lisa Salon”. Both of them were published by Bad Head, an alternative label of Modernsky. Since then, their music were no longer limited to Haifeng dialect (belonging to the hokkien and Fulao dialect). They started to perform in mandarin. Up to now, Wu Tiao Ren has won several influential music awards, such as the Chinese Music Media Awards and Taiwan Golden Indie Music Awards. Beyond the music industry, Wu Tiao Ren has also participated in many contemporary art exhibitions and activities. Rooted in the Chaoshan Plain and the Pearl River Delta, Wu Tiao Ren’s music is an alternative new wave of Cantonpop. They are street punk artists who seem to sing folk songs. From country music to pop music, then to psychedelic rock, Wu Tiao Ren’s live performance is more like a drama party. Their songs are the joys and sorrows of a generation of young people who come from countryside or metropolis. They’re also the stories of the fate of the nobodies in the great age.
