Is Smoking a Major Addiction in China or Just a Rite of Passage to Becoming a Man?

Is it me or does it seem like every man over the age of 20 smokes?? It also seems many are chain smokers. I see them smoking in the locker room of my gym, right under the sign that says "No Smoking", I see them smoking in elevators, I seem them smoke before they get on a train and rush off of it 45 minutes later to smoke again, I see them smoking in restaurants, I find cigarette butts in the strangest places! It's like a major addiction or is it just part of being a man here?

Is the government doing anything about this? I wonder what the cancer rate is in China from smoking? I was told that smoking used to be for men only, but now many ladies smoking too.

yes its an addiction thats why tobacco companies making huge dollars in china. they are doing something about it in beijing most places have non smoking areas. just takes time for shenzhen you know its far away from the capital and as you know theres not much cops in shenzhen.
Not quite sure about whether it is an addiction. Personally I do not smoke since the smell of the cigarette makes me sick. Unfortunately lots of my friends smoke.

I know they smoke for different reasons, some of them just think that smoking is a good way to release their pressure by hard working; some of them think that smoking keeps them clear/sober; some smokes just becuase they are used to it, they sort of rely on the nicotine in cigarettes and cannot quit (this could be the addiction); the weirdese reason I know is that some even think smoking is pretty cool.

Anyway, I do not think that smoking is good thing and it actually affects your health very much. The government is now trying to do something about this but I do not expect this situation will be changed very soon, you know how big is this country and how many people smoking in this coutry. And I think this is a universal issue. I see loads of young people smoking when I was in UK but they do in a better manner - never smoke in the public places. Anyhow, I think this just depends on the policies made by the goverment. When I was travelling in Switzerland, I see people smoking in dinners, restaurants and pubs because they are allowed to do so.

I hate smoking and try to persuade my friends quit smoking but never succeed. Such a shame.
you try getting them to smoke cigars not sure if cigar smokes will make you sick. i know few people that i know the doc told them they better not smoke due to health issues they smoke like 3 packs a day of cancer sticks, so they quit smoking now they are smoking cigars.
Firstly I do not think the government will doing anything about it anytime soon considering it is a major source of revenue. Alot of the cigarette companies in China are state owned. China may be the last bastion of smokers. HK has banned public smoking as of this year.
