When I was young I used to long for my 18th birthday so that I could drink in any bar (in the UK) without worrying about getting ID'd or refused entry.
When my friends and I were all over 18, we began to drink at least 2-3 times per week and we always got drunk. A few of my friends continue to drink to this life style and one in particular has got drunk every night for the past 39 days (something he told me with much pride).
I used to get drunk every Friday and Saturday night, without fail, for about 6 years. I then used to go on a beer holiday which resulted in some very embarrassing and some very funny stories. When we travelled Europe (me and 2 of my best friends with a lot of cash and 6 months off) we got so drunk that I can't actually remember being in the Ukraine.
Then I met a woman and things changed. I now work a lot and rarely drink, however once a beer has passed my lips I always end up getting drunk. It is the same story everytime, I say "just one with dinner" then it becomes 5 am and I am stumbling through the door trying my best to make it to the toilet before I piss.
The questions:
Does this make me an alcoholic?
Does anybody have any good ways to avoid temptation?
Does anybody have any advice on self control?

Does alcoholism, run in the blood?
It ran in my family, I drink far too much, but I always know when to say "no".
Like yourself, I like a beer or two, but I don't crave it, and I know my limit.
Do you smoke?
Alcoholism is often genetic, and affects people with addictive personalities, ie: you addict yourself to it, not the alcohol addict itself to you, I think what "dingdong" said is a very valid point.
Anyway mate, of our few encounters you are a decent guy.... parenthood looms, if you want any tips, I am only too happy to offer any suggestions, you will make a good dad....don't worry about the alcohol fatherhood will change you!
