Permalink Reply by EK on February 16, 2012 at 12:56pm must have been very deep underground.
On the richter scale this is a quake, but may have been felt like a tremor.
If the energy was centered at a shallow depth underground it would have caused a shitload of damage.
One of the most powerful Earthquakes they experienced back home in Christchurch was 5.8 as I remember, at a depth of only 5km underground, it did a shitload of damage, but with less casualties than the previous 7.8 we had.
The hand of god Earthquake is probably when you get something in the 7's, at a shallow depth, these ones, cause much death and carnage, fortunately no one has been hurt, nor is there any damage...or is there?
Hey one of the deadliest Earthquakes of the twentieth Century occurred here, 1976 I believe, it may have been a 7.8 or 8.2, in Tang Shan.
However, with the dense population and rudimentary buildings at the time, this must have exacerbated the death toll, an d certainly didn't help humanities cause.
Let's hope last nights Earthquake isn't a sign of things to come!
