Can anyone recommend a good bodybuilding gym near Shekou area?

I am looking for somewhere to train with a good selection of free weights, barbells, and heavy selection of dumbells.

there are pretty much many options, but depends on your requirements and budget. btw, shekou area is a big range, it might be easier to recommend if you let people know where you live around :)

I am going to be staying at the Ascott Maillen Apartments. Budget is not really a major concern, just want to find a good place with a lot of free weights, heavy dumbells, benches, squat racks, and a good variety of machines. Not really a fitness orientated gym but more a weight training gym. I don't mind going a few stops on the metro to find one either

Vitality gym is one block away from Ascott (which I can see from my window right now) and is one of the best places for your requirements in all of Shenzhen, even though it is quite small.

We currently only have up to 40 kg dumbbells there, which is already much heavier than what you can typically find in gyms around China. I am currently trying to negotiate with the owner to get heavier dumbbells.

hahaha  according to what your need, i might recommend Vitality gym also :)

We got 50 kg dumbbells at Vitality gym now. Yeah!

Vitality just closed, transferring memberships to Total Fitness next to Seaworld's Mc Donald.

If one liked the free weight bias of Vitality as well as the non stop powerlifting/fighting sport training/sexy female fitness videos, they are in for a disappointment in Total fitness. Justin Bieber sounds hardcore compared to the music they play there, and the the free weight room is very small - it has a mixed Squat rack/deadlift platform which is great and the first i've seen in Shenzhen but the free weights area is very cramped as well as under equipped. Forget about staff speaking any english as well.

HW Fitness below Vitality had set up a good weightlifting room but it is closed as well.

Any other advice on where to work out with free weights ?  The closer to Ascott the better ?

I train in Wolf gym on Gongye 3 sometimes, find the place much more pleasant than Total Fitness ( just the name is offputting if you are a powerlifting fan) but Wolf lacks DBs over 25kgs, the squat rack is hardly usable and I find the bench dangerous to work low reps alone. Very quiet and OK for deadlift and a few more BB exercises though. Not sure it will last long either, Wolf has scaled back its size lately and the next step might be to close down, there is seldom any staff present

Anyone has advice ?


It is quite sad that Vitality closed (because of unsustainable rent prices and countless gym openings in the area).

I also find Total Fitness at SeaWorld unbearable with their Disco lighting, the overcrowding and the tiny free weight section.

The best alternative I could find is the recently opened Peak Bird Gym that is right in front and downstairs of the ship in SeaWorld on the metro level. Their free weight section is certainly better. Don't miss their large power racks in the separate rooms.

I am now at Peak Bird Gym … so far so good. A bit afraid it will close down because not really busy 

What are the open hours? How early in the morning?
