Of course overpricing is relative. What I am talking about is poor value for money where the price and quality do not match.
I nominate 2 places:
1. McCawleys- I only eat there when there is a promotion on, because their value at full price is a disgrace. Eg 90rmb for an English breakfast, 135rmb for a very average steak and 55rmb for a bowl of chips. The service is awful as well.
2. Le Bistro- large prices and tiny portions. Starving when you go in, still starving when I leave.
On the other hand some places are great value for money, like the Kitchen, Spice Circle Indian and the buffet restaurant at the top of holiday plaza.

Permalink Reply by Profanipenguin on April 4, 2012 at 12:01pm We find ourselves in agreement for once - McCawley's Futian would top my list nowadays - the food's shit too (it used to be nice 2 years ago), it's expensive for what it is, and the service is abysmal. That also goes for the Mexican next door - which used to be excellent. The Indian downstairs is expensive, particularly for Shenzhen, but the food is very good even if the portions are tiny.
I'm going to risk a heretical moment and nominate Angelo's too - which used to be excellent value despite the high price tag, but the food in Futian is awful now and far too expensive for what it is.
Permalink Reply by EK on April 6, 2012 at 11:54am Hmm, we received terrible service there only a few weeks ago too, had to wait one and a half hours for our meal.
The manageress told me "so what", yes I understood they were busy, but at that stage I wanted to kick her arse, alas she is female, I just had to bite my tongue.
The foreign manager was polite and helpful as always, what do these Chinese workers in there need, someone to constantly tell them how to think, for fucks sakes, it's a business, if it was up to me, I would sack the slackers, and there is quite a few in there, otherwise, I still enjoy frequenting the place, and am happy to pay slightly higher than average prices.....as long as I get served in due time, and that the service improves!
Rats at "The Kitchen" are also very cheap and yummy!!

Permalink Reply by Michael on April 5, 2012 at 9:27pm 4. an italian restaurant in portofino (forgot the name) charged 900+ RMB for a pretty average 3 course meal. The steak alone was over 500RMB from memory. i laughed when i received the bill - i was tricked into believing they didnt have a menu so i chose from pictures supplied by waiters.......bad mistake. NEVER BEEN BACK TO PORTOFINO SINCE
Permalink Reply by Zen on my back on April 4, 2012 at 1:54pm Pizza and beer are generally overpriced items: you should not pay any more than 60/70 yuan for a combo anywhere around the city.
Permalink Reply by DirtyDave on April 5, 2012 at 9:14am I believe any restaurant that sells a beer for more than 25rmb is a massive rip-off. Mc cawleys 60RMB for a Guinness and 90rmb for bangers/mash is a facking joke. However the food quality in Mc cawleys shekou is better then Futian I think and the service as well, plus their 22rmb for a carlsberg pint on happy hour is acceptable.
Angelo's is expensive, probably the most expensive of them all and definitely not targeted for regular Shenzhen expats but more for the people here on short business trips.
I reckon that these places all have high prices because there rent is so expensive, I know around coco its massive cash they paying every month for those places. We all complain about it, but in the end we would all complain if they were gone. So like you best to take advantage of happy hours and specials. haha
Permalink Reply by EK on April 6, 2012 at 11:56am I think this has more to do with "inflation" ...or apparently so, I think food and drink in general are expensive in Shen Zhen, ie: more expensive than they should be given the value of the dollar, the local quality goods, and yes, piss poor service to top it off!
Permalink Reply by Bones on April 5, 2012 at 12:25pm Le Bistro make me hate more the french dishes after first trial...the only good thing are the drink is better than Viva and less noises and barely no nasty ppl around.
Permalink Reply by Air Marine on April 5, 2012 at 2:32pm Angelo's. Small portions. Boss do not allow parmesan to be added on pasta by guest, only by waiter... Don't put too much ;-), or you get slapped on fingers.
