Permalink Reply by JM Cunningham on February 24, 2012 at 9:23am Sorry fellas, I Installed Ubuntu 11.10 in my computer and it seems sometimes a little off to me. even though design and functios seem sleek and organized there's still something missing. I am writing this discussion on it and cut it before I could send it.
Any Ubuntu enthusiast here in Shenzhen??
I am trying the OS on my older laptop. Going to use it just for music and movies so I was looking for as much room on my hard drive as I can get-80 GB HD and windows was taking up about 15 GB of that. So far so good as i got it installed after a bit of trouble-my dvd player is a bit cranky to start off of a program. Will let you know after I play with it more but now it is back to my Aurora to flash a new ROM :)

have not got to the point to look for programs yet-hope there are good ones
Permalink Reply by GrandPa on February 24, 2012 at 10:54am I hope you do not mind me asking, but I am curious. Why are you using this operating system? What benefit do you see compared to Apple or Microsoft? I am not judging your decision in anyway I would really like to now what motivates you. I would think there are problems in finding drives and software, so there must be some benefit. Or is it just fun to experiment?
Fun to play :)
I have been playing around with Android system for a little on my phone and tablet-rooting and what not.
Android and Ubuntu are both a flavor of Unix. Unix is free and takes up little room as an OS compared to Windows.
They are talking now with dual core and quad core phones being your main computer-just dock it into a keyboard and monitor at home and the office. The only problem is storage space and now that is being solved by storing things in the cloud and cloud computing. So maybe we will see new systems that use less space and are more efficient
I used to work on cars for a living and i miss that-can't really do that here and building things too. Then I moved on to computers to play with-both hardware and software. Now I am playing with my phone and tablet-for the most part with programs. Android is free for most things so an inexpensive hobby.
Guess it's time to find a GF-sounds like i am turning into a geek :)
Permalink Reply by GrandPa on February 24, 2012 at 11:17am ...I can understand that. It is funny you mention Unix. You might know that I owned a computer software/hardware company for nine years. We did boring stuff, accounting and ERP software and network solutions. This was back in the 80s to 90s...LOL We used Unix as a platform back then. It was one nice operating system.
We had to move to Novel networks because IT departments at our clients were pushing that way (and then later to Windows Server) but I must say I look back with fond memories at Unix.
Permalink Reply by JM Cunningham on February 27, 2012 at 10:22am It's always important to me finding new OS developments. I am fine with WIN7 and Apple. But we never know what the next breakthrough will be. There are no problems finding drivers at all, it uses the native drivers you had with Windows. It's freeware and virus free as well. It uses a lot less memory and space than other OS. I still feel is in the making but I think it will soon be a very attractive OS for manufacturers.

Permalink Reply by madnut on March 2, 2012 at 11:34am I have to say, i have been using Ubuntu from i arrived in China, at the start i thought this is old and backward, like .. $ sudo apt-get install ddclient { or what ever program } I had a lot of trouble getting my head around installing programs and drivers for other things.
I then did an update to "NATTY" ubtunu 11.04 and decided to see just what power does Linux based machine give you, to do this i thought why not design and host my own website. So far i have a two test pages built with links, Apache2 installed, dns domain name reg, ddclient running to keep the ip for the dns serving the right ip due to not having a static ip, but i learning now i dont need a dns. I have also installed MYSQL { data base } to hold records for a website, such as adding a log in screen, mysql will hold records of passwords and user names etc. Also got php and css all working and apache reading it all fine.
Then came the hard stuff, port forwarding and dropping firewalls which i am still working on.
Now i came from being a heavy XP user, and i can tell you now, i so glad i doing all this from Ubuntu linux, cause XP would just be a nightmare to try and configure. Besides the fact you use sudo to do lots for you, there is a back up, by doing the command su, then enter your root password, first i was afraid,, jsss ROOT, i going to balls this up. But i sure you know Dave from shenzhen stuff, he,s the linux guy in here, and he told me to keep at it.
And i glad i have, in windows its a lot more user friendly in the sense of, it will stop you from going into files that you could change that could harm your pc or running programs that rely on each other will be messed up, in fact i have read of a few people thats new to linux and have done just that. And yes i did it to.. lol but because of the way Ubuntu is put together i found i could still get to sudo and was able to get it back working in a few hours.
Your sort of right and wrong in what you say about no virus, its not a virus you need to worry about, its getting hacked. lol And we like to call them virus,s, a virus is nothing more than a man or woman made piece of code written and sent along with something you may want to download, i had a trojen horse sitting in my pc back home for near a year while running XP, i only picked it out after a paid for real good scanner.
But going back to hacking, its very unlikely your pc will be singled out by a hacker, unless running a data base for a website were you my be holding Mastercard and visa details belonging to customers. I think what i trying to say here, and i know this cause i am going though all the security checks and therefore to stop a hacker you have to learn how they get in. There is no pc on this earth that cant be hacked! Unless its not connected to the net! Yes my god i am turning into a geek.. hahaha
Well to round this of, and i sure some of you are glad, for anything you may wish to find out about ubuntu and learning a few basic commands. When your doing a google search end it with ubuntu 11.10. this will take you to the ubuntu help sites which are very handy, try to stay away from other sites because there advice i have took of other sites and really looking back now at what commands i was told to enter, there are some idiots in this world that will cause a screw lose in you machine.
I also pull the notepad up sometimes and copy commands for future ref.. there,s that many, also ubuntu you will find as got lots of programs and extra,s that are not even installed yet, but you do have them.
By going to ... System / administration / Synaptic package Manager ... you can browse around there and by high lighting any uninstalled program for detail of what it will do.
All in all, i will use XP again but only for a gaming rig i will build. Linux gives you far more control over your pc and programs that run on it. And remember... pc,s were NEVER designed to take online payments its to much of an open system. If i wanted to and linux gives me the power to do this, i can start to look at traffic thats on the same network as me.. wooo there goes ip 12.456.78.34. with a paypal password and email.. got there ip address.. hmmm lets take a look and see what ports are open and what the firewall configure is. Easy. But whats the point.. its fort Knocks i looking for, or wall street. hahah
Good luck.
Welcome to ubuntu.
