Shenzhen Stuff

We sometimes find ourselves in a situation where we are served with food that is exotic or strange for us but common for the others at the table. There was one time when I was really hungry and when the main dish was served, I was told it was horse meat and I'm like WTF. I didn't want to be rude as it seemed to be a normal dish for the others, I wanted to tell them but I was afraid I would offend them. I thought that if I seemed disgusted and refused to eat, they might think I'm disgusted at them too for eating it, we are what we eat after all.

I have been offered snakes, frogs, crickets and what not. I was even told to eat braised deer's penis once because apparently it increases libido, and I refused politely while they ate. What are your thoughts on this? If you are offered something you don't like or find strange, can you refuse, knowing that they might take offense when you do? How do you handle this situation?

Then there are a lot of pussies on this website.

And you came to that conclusion because?

Did you tell them , you already have worms????? LOL

If I have anymore worms in my diet, I wont be able to stop scratching my arse for months! :-)

Maybe I can get away with pretending to be a vegetarian. Thanks.

You freak out over horse meat?!? Like, why? I've eaten it, it's ok.

To answer your question: yes, you can refuse if it bothers you.

Or you can try to play it cool, put some in your bowl, then never eat it. Works pretty well in China.

I didn't freak out I just thought it was weird. Playing it cool might work. Thanks.

You freak out over horse meat , I too have tried it,  nothing to write home about at all.

I know the Argentinians are huge on it, but I think it tastes pretty bland, not to mention tough, would have a slab of beef, or lamb anyday!

Cos I'm Filo people assume that I can eat lots of weird shit. Or I'm Asian so I must be able to stomach it all. But nope, I am super picky and I won't eat anything that I'm unfamiliar with. If you've so much as cooked carrots in a weird way, I ain't going to touch that shit. I eat fish (without heads, bones and tails), chicken, beef, pork (as long as its in pieces. Won't touch anything if I see its face), I rarely eat lamb. I've never eaten kangaroo, nor will I ever. I stay away from most Chinese dishes and if something is messy to eat I won't order it.

If I am what I eat...then I'm traditional but spicy.

and you call yourself an ocker.....LOL.

Sacrilege, and you don't eat lamb....:P

I always eat whatever is offered with the exception of insects. I am not a fussy eater, but somehow insects turn me off. I don't think I ever offended anyone by my refusal. I just say "No thanks" without commenting on grossness of eating  bugs. Everyone doesn't like something. They understand.

I have eaten horse. It was OK, and was considered a great delicacy by the person who served to me. It was brought from Xinjiang, so I assumed it was sort of a regional dish. It was OK and I didn't notice a distinct different flavor from other meats.

For the horselovers out there, there are actually donkey meat hotpot restaurants all over SZ. Was taken to one by a customer and initially misunderstood him that it was an ostrich meat restaurant. Just another non-descript white looking meat that "tastes like chicken or pork" in a soup.

When I was in Algeria I met a Belgian girl giving a description of a meal in a restaurant "I ordered horse and they gave me camel!!"
