We sometimes find ourselves in a situation where we are served with food that is exotic or strange for us but common for the others at the table. There was one time when I was really hungry and when the main dish was served, I was told it was horse meat and I'm like WTF. I didn't want to be rude as it seemed to be a normal dish for the others, I wanted to tell them but I was afraid I would offend them. I thought that if I seemed disgusted and refused to eat, they might think I'm disgusted at them too for eating it, we are what we eat after all.
I have been offered snakes, frogs, crickets and what not. I was even told to eat braised deer's penis once because apparently it increases libido, and I refused politely while they ate. What are your thoughts on this? If you are offered something you don't like or find strange, can you refuse, knowing that they might take offense when you do? How do you handle this situation?

if I catch them suspiciously eyeing my dish I throw in a " Kan Bei " and no one is the wiser...

Permalink Reply by tim on May 17, 2012 at 5:58pm i will try almost anything once.. no matter how gross sounding i'd give it a go... so far my only exception has been silkworm.. but i've been surprized a couple times.. i'm a big fan of scorpions on a stick.. i eat them regularly now .. the little ones though.. just pop it back.. and i like 'duck's neck'..hey, it doesnt sound that weird to us now..but the first time i heard of it i thought it sounded so gross...
good suggestions on avoiding food though!!! just politely put some in your bowl and dont eat it.. no need to offend anyone.. but i've been here six years now.. i know how to tell people what i will/wont eat in a polite enough way and care about my own health than their face!

I suggest trying jellyfish, the Malaysians love it, and personally it is disgusting, I could throw rotten tofu, into this category as well!
The silkworms sound awful too, I have heard they can be popular though, perhaps not amongst us foreigners, oh well, plenty of protein in all I guess!
Cockroaches, bugs, grasshoppers and crickets, are for sale at a restaurant down the road, if you are keen to go sometime! :P
