Captain Rue-Yi and the TaiconNauts
The nucleus of Captain Rue-Yi and the TaiconNauts is Tom Bird and myself, Rue Moyer. He and I are singer/songwriters with a good mix of musical taste and interest in modern and ancient China. Our goal is to create music that reflects the realities of China's development into modernism and the impact of opening its doors to the West. The name of our first album is "Pearl River Delta Blues." The album name and direction of the band was inspired from the sound that came from the Mississippi River Delta in mid 20th century America where the root of modern Rock N' Roll was born. Thus, the Pearl River Delta is as good as any place in China from which to create metaphors and use as inspiration for the direction of our music, song lyrics and album.
Bass Guitar

Tom Bird is humorous young chap from Wales with wispy blonde hair and a charming smile. It's no surprise that Bird is in China as he has a MA in Chinese studies and currently teaches at a respected university. Much of the album’s musical direction comes from his creativity and input. He has an extensive wealth of knowledge on mid- through late 1970’s American music, which plays an integral part of the sound of our band. Bird has been in several bands over the past few years and currently plays bass guitar and back up vocals. As the bass is the anchor of all music, so too is Tom's musical flavor for our band.
Drums/Percussion
All the way from Hunnan province comes a man who is no stranger to the world of professional music. Funky, or KungFu Panda is the strength of the “Roll” part of our Rock N’ Roll. Often having to travel within China on a weekly basis to play gigs, Funky is hands down the best percussionist this side of the Delta. Funky has spent a few years in the U.S.A, including the fast paced world of Hollywood, C.A., where he performed with some of America’s best musicians. Now he’s returned to the homeland and has settled in as the music manager for the ONLY original music bar in Shenzhen; giving him the time to enjoy music and also act as the guy-to-know for all musicians in China. It’s truly an honor and a privilege to have his expertise filling in the gaps and keeping the rhythm of our band.
Lead Guitarist

Fred. What to say about Fred? He told me “Tell them I’m from Seattle and I play guitar. That’s all they need to know…” Fact is, once you hear his sound you realize it’s more important than any name or any story. It stands alone. He’s a true ramblin’ man whose story you can only hear through his intriguing, journey inducing music. His style of electric guitar reflects his experience as a musician who’s heard a lot, seen a lot, but still wants more. Unlike the rest of us, Fred grew up alongside the unique development of American root music and is undoubtedly the key ingredient to our sound.
Rhythm Guitar and Lead Vocals

Me??? I’m the founder and voice of the band. I bring the passion for change and the soul of the American country boy experience into our eclectic mix. I’m dedicated to helping humanity, be it teaching, writing music or a simple smile on the subway. I’m in China to continue my journey on the river of life studying philosophy and history. My hope is to continue connecting the pieces of this puzzle that we call life while creating the music that shares my experiences.
