Shenzhen Stuff

Hi everyone,

Which GPS you found being the best to be used in China? Garmin, TomTom or the Chinese OEM brands. Any with Pinyin or english map? You found the info given by it accurate?

I am using a 650.00 RMB bought in HuaQianBei, not bad at all. I saved probably twice this money as it avoided me speed tickets telling with accuracy the fixed camera on the roads. But now, the police in Guandong is getting equipped with mobile radar...

Hainan where I live has funny policy. On national road, from Sanya to Haikou, you've got speed limited to... 5 Km/h! Even Roberto doing his jogging could be having a ticket! Lucky he doesn't put his plate license on his butt.

Good day.

I'm using the google maps application on my phone.. I'll be honest it's the best solution

1) I can copy and paste SMS messages into it and find addresses in Chinese
2) You can search in English or Chinese
3) It has live traffic updates
4) It displays street names in English and Chinese
5) It has things like Wikipedia hotspots on the map, and all live content etc

It is the one and only final solution to the GPS question.
But afaik Google Maps needs an active internet connection to work. I currently using Garmin Mobile XT on my phonewith Pinyin map, works pretty well, the only disadvantage is that you cant search for places in other cities. So in order to find a restaurant in Guangzhou you first have to drive there or know the address beforehand.
Yeah it does need an active connection.. which can be very inconvenient when you run out of airtime ;)
I did a few roadtrips with Google Maps on the iPhone. It worked, but:
- many maps are out of date
- GPS is very inaccurate when used in China
- other GPS systems warn you of speed cameras
Well perhaps it's been fixed since it's 100% accurate for me and the maps are up to date (all the new highways and roads that have been completed only months ago are there), plus you get the satellite / map hybrid view with live traffic updates etc, that satellite hybrid is great to look out for landmarks etc if you're not sure if you're going the right way or not. No speed cameras yes, keep your eyes peeled for those manually
i am using the in built, didnt think to buy a new one, just update it and it works fine, and according to mine, its accurate.....dont know abt the rest....
Interesting. Which iPhone are you using? The 3G i am using is really not accurate, when you switch from map view to satellite view you will always be off a few hundred meters. Same when you use it on your computer, satellite and map are not overlapping correctly.
Ah, that'd be your problem, the iphone only uses a web based google maps app, my HTC uses a stand alone application, and yes the web version is inaccurate. It's cool since you can also use latitude
i didnt buy sepratley, i buyed the Honda CRV, high end, and the music system comes with GPS thought it chinese made, still work accurate, i need to upgrade to new one, but didint getting time to do it..............
