Hey Shanti I have a book called "The Inheritance of Loss" by Kiran Desai.  I dunno if she lives in India but she was born there... Anyway I really loved the book when I read it years ago.  If you want it let me know.

If anyone has some good history books they're willing to share please don't hesitate.  Books about any place or time interest me, not sure why but I've been on a history kick lately.

As for cheap english books in sz... Go to Hong Kong.

Just finishing Lisa See's historical fiction titled, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Beautifully written in gentle language with fascinating details of being a woman in 19th century China, it details foot binding, child bearing and family life, and even war. It's may not become a literary classic but for those who prefer literature to junk fiction, this is a book worth checking out. I began it in an effort to learn more about Chinese culture and have enjoyed it so much that I've now got several Chinese women interested in it. Evocative and tender without resorting to chick lit tropes, See's writing has intrigued me enough to want to read more of her titles.
