Using samples - stealing, paying tribute or standing on the shoulders of giants?

I recently got challenged to come up with a song using Grieg's Hall of the Mountain King somewhere in the bassline. Below are the lyrics and I'll post a clip once recorded. What does anyone think about samples or borrowing lines from other songs? Is it stealing, paying tribute or standing on the shoulders of giants?

Down In The Ancient Quiet
Steve Wharton June 2013

Am        Em
Running away from the bright skies
Am            Em
Driving like hell for the hillside
Am               Em                            C                               Em
Got a bag of metal and ropes and someone to show me the way

Am           Em
Hiding our car keys in the drystone wall
Am          Em
Waiting in turn for the rope free call
Am        Em                C                    Em
Sinking away from the daylight into a familiar cave

C                               D
Maybe you can't understand how good it feels
         Em
To be cold, wet and shivering
     C
Beneath the waterfall a headtorch is flickering
Em                         D
Down in the ancient quiet I feel alive
Down in the ancient quiet

Am Em Am Em Am Em C Em x 2
with Hall of the Mountain King bassline

Am       Em
I'm not hunting for anything
Am          Em
No buried treasure or the one ring
Am            Em                                C                            Em
There is no hall of the mountain king, only what nature has carved

Am                Em
The cities and towns I have tried
Am      Em
For the bedrock and karst I have cried
Am             Em                                   C                                  Em
Calcite grown over thousands of years, seen only by dozens of eyes.

C                                 D
Maybe you can't understand how good it feels
Em
To be stuck, underground, your heart rate is quickening
      C
'Til you stop, look around, the flowstone is shimmering
Em                          D
Down in the ancient quiet I feel alive
Down in the ancient quiet

Am Em Am Em Am Em C Em x 2
with Hall of the Mountain King bassline

C                                  D
Maybe you can't understand how good it feels
Em
To be stuck, underground, your heart rate is quickening
C
'Til you stop, look around, the flowstone is shimmering
Em                         D
Down in the ancient quiet I feel alive
Down in the ancient quiet

Am Em Am Em Am Em C Em x 2
with Hall of the Mountain King bassline

DJ's has been using sampling forever and this even gave birth to hip hop music as we knew it. Giants are big enough and usually wouldnt care. I see it as paying tribute.

So the song is now live and being played by my band, Dram. Funny thing is, we don't include the bassline. So I guess it was the inspiration and framework but now that scaffolding has been removed completely. You can hear it on a rehearsal recording (6 minutes in) on the band's SZStuff page here
