I was talking online with my mother last week, for Mother's Day, and she kept pressing me for details about what life is like in China, and after a while, it occurred to me that things that used to make me do a triple-take don't even faze me anymore. Six months ago, I was living a blissfully comfortable life in one of the quaintest towns in the United States, Charlottesville, Virginia. I drove the same roads I'd driven since the day I got my driver's license, the same roads that my parents drove before that.
