True words about Time

“Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”…

Well, from what I heard from Elena, if you leave and already have an ID and a visa, the company cannot simply just void it as they please. Olya left her previous company precisely like this: her visa and ID were still valid and she stayed in HK for a while before she found another job.

Of course, I do not want to be planning my 'retreat' before I even started, but what I am saying is, if things went from bad to worse, I'd have to do it. I know anyhow that I wouldn't be able to withstand such a travelling regime for more than a year. Id' definitely want to change. I hope I can do it anyway.

Ha! Well, it would seem then that the greatest majority of such businesses are "Indianized" than those other ones (MNC or BPOs, whatever they mean!) :-)) Because I've never heard any overly positive accounts of working for an Indian company, to be honest. That said, I still think that sometimes you just have to give it a go, otherwise you will never know.

As for 'nice' people...In all honesty, Sudhir, I believe people in India aren't that much nicer than most others in this world...That is, when it comes to their own interest they will ignore everything and just pursue it. Unless you're very close with them, they won't be bending over backwards or something like that. This, from my observations, is true for the majority of human beings on this planet, just the degree to which it is displayed is different from culture to culture. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule - always! - and that is what makes relationships and friendships worthwhile. I remember William talked aboutnhis disappointment in regards to Thai people. That everyone believes them to be so nice and peaceful and now BANG! here they go shooitng people and stuff. That boils down to exactly the same issue: people are essentially the same everywhere.

Oh well, but how can they screw me even if the sponsor me for a visa?! I can always leave, can't I, if things come to a head...I don't need to wait until that visa riuns out and in the meantime maybe it'll be possible to find another job? I'm told that it's much easier to process a second/thrid etc work visa than the very first one, so perhaps recuiters will be more eager to consider my candidature?

Well, you know me, don't you; I won't be able to put up with too much bullshit; however, I'll be prepared to take in some heat just to start off with my HK-based career, so to say :-)

This is something I've been teasing WIlliam with and what I fail to understand myself: why, if so many peple find India so interesting and people there to be so 'nice', are they such a pain in the ass to work with, if you excuse the expresion?!

Yes, if you linger here on Tuesday, we can meet up for dinner or something like that. Not sure about vegetarian options, though....Might go to Spaghetti house and get a veggie pizza or something like this.

No, that is a different Olya (Elena's ex-colleague from the consulting company).

I know, working for an Indian company must have its perks. I hope you don't mind me telling you that at least when I was in the UK I avoided taking jobs where bosses/buiness owners were Indians like the plague! I don't know, may be it's just an immigrant thing, but I found most Indians in the UK had a chip on their shoulder, they were very dominating and authoritative, even as colleagues. A friend was working in an Indian shop there and she was telling me she'd never work for an Indian business again. :-(

However...I'm still willing to try if only I find out more details about the company. Plus, it's HK and the situation here is kind of different (you don't just have illegal people working for you, so you can manipulate them; nor do you have student part-timers, who you can also manipulate).
Anyway, I am so sick of my current situation, I want to do something to change it! :-P
I will get the details from Olya when she's back in 2 weeks and let you know the company name.

Yes, a karaoke will definitely have to be on a weekend. I was thinking of maybe doing it on Friday night (William and you could come after work) and then you could stay overnight and the next day we can have lunch at my place and maybe go to Window of the World? William was thinking of going there if you can make it, since you haven't been there, plus, we can dress up in more costumes! Lol

Oh yeah, and I can only hope there will be more business ties between HK and Russia, so that I have more chances to land a different job (even if I get this coming one). I wouldn't want to be away from HK all the time: it defeats my purpose of moving there!!

Yes, a job with...surprise surprise! an Indian company! ;-) A Russian girl who is currently working for them is looking to leave for another job and asked me if I'd like to take her place. The company produces jewellery and the job is in sales. It involves extensive travelling on business, practically 350 days a year!! :-P That's what Olya has told me so far. I still don't know much about the job as she is supposed to return from her current business trip and then we will have a chat about and she will tell me more. And then I will go to talk to the people in this company.
I'm more than happy to change my job, although I am not sure how long I will be able to last in such a travelling regime :-P Also, I think if I am away from Hong Kong most of the year, there is no point renting an expensive place there, so I shall just keep my Shenzhen apartment. Especially because this week I need to decide whether I continue to rent the same apartment and sign a new contract. However, the situation with the job isn't clear yet, so I cannot just say I won't extend the contract, and then end up not taking the job after all.

In a word, so far, I am not sure of anything. Whatever happens I'd REALLY like you and William to come and visit me before any change takes effect. For if it did, I'd be away most of the time and it'd be quite difficult to make time for a karaoke or your guys' visit :-))

Yes, people can give me the looks, I don't particularly mind. But if it happens in a class, where you have to be for 3 hours and where once they might finally speak to you about it, I'd still feel a bit awkward. Anyway, it's a good idea for us to enrol into a different class and then pass 'intelligence info' on to William! :-D

Today? Noooo, come on, I have written that it was yesterday that I helped them out. Got back really late, went straight to bed but still feeling totally wasted today. I can't wait to just finish with it and go home and sleep!

Well, my concentration level will not improve much further in any circumstances. ;-) If you are romantically attracted to someone, irrespective of the situation, you will still find it hard to stay focused, eh? Also, I think there is a feeling of awkwardness in the class: some people must be feeling like asking me something about my relationship with William but they do not dare :-P ;-) I can sense it from some of their looks and innuendos they make :-)

That is why I think I will not be repeating any classes. It will just continue to be awkward. Instead, I have promised William to act as a spy on some of other Cantonese classes :-)) I might join another teacher's class to fulfill this promise :-)) If I don't get that job that is in the wings for me, in that case I won't be able to as most of the time I shall be away on business trips.

No, I can't remember you mentioning anything about HK and Russia negotiating their business ties. Where did you come across this?
At 11:11am on October 28, 2010, 我是维奇 said…
Heh, you mean Cantonese classes? ;-)

Sure, there is always something new each time but...you know how good my concentration is at the moment...:-P I don't think I should do any more classes, Sudhir.

I was out in HK yesterday evening, helping the Russian guys from Nanjing that I trained in September to make the best of their short transit in Hong Kong. Feeling really knackered today. :-P

How are things on your side of the wall? ;-) Still working hard?

I hate my job more and more, I really am prepared to do just about anything to bring any changes into my life in that respect! :-(

Well, I hope something is on around LKF. I'm told that most bars in KLF have been closed - looks like major renovation work is in the wings there!

Nope, PMs on here. The last ones were a bit long, so I apologize, lol. I've NEVER excelled at being laconic ;-)

You mean the night of 31st? Alas, I am going to a concert by James Galway, a great Irish flautist. I called Urbitix for the tickets when we were on the train, remember? I'll have to leave a little bit before the class is finished...:-(
