A few favourite quotes:

So, in preparation for my Silk Road trip, I've been learning to pronounce the places better. What I called Kashgar as a boy should really be Kashi, similarly Urumqi should be Wulumuqi and Turpan Tulufan.
Then today we has an Uyghur driver and asked him about the names and he rolled of Kashgar, Urumqi and Turpan. So it's all a problem with Han Chinese being unable to pronounce the words, and not my problem.
Or is it the other way? Money goes round the World?
Mine has or will do so. I've worked for an American company for much of my life and built up a fairly substantial pension fund. According to the rules of the fund I must make annual withdrawals, starting from 2014 when I was 67. The pension company, Fidelity, are based in Boston. They have some inconvenient rules for foreigners such as myself. They will only communicate by phone, not email. They will only do a bank transfer of money…Continue
We must all do our bit towards reducing our carbon footprint, and yesterday I found out what my company's contribution seems to be. I am having problems drawing from my US pension fund and needed to call the UK yesterday while at the same time accessing files on my computer. So I got to the office at 3pm to find my phone was dead. I tried the receptionist phone, tyhe head of office phone - all dead. Then I wandered around for 15 minutes looking for a likely place to make them undead. I found…Continue
My son Chris and his friend Matt visited during August and our first trip was to Anhui. We took the train up from SZ North to Huangshan Station [actually it’s Tunxi and quite a distance from the actual mountain] and stayed there for a couple of nights.
The Laojie area is good, but quite crowded and people eat early. By the time we were in a restaurant about 8 o’clock most of the famous local dishes had sold out. The next day we toured in a taxi visiting Chengkan, Zilusi Hong Village…Continue
My daughter has been visiting China with her partner and was spending the last few days in HK showing him where she was born and grew up. Coincidentally those were the first four days of the HK Book Fair, so I spent a lot of time there.
It was much bigger than I expected and much more crowded too. …Continue
My landlord for the past twelve years has decided to sell the flat and so I have had to move. I wanted to stay in the same general area so I could carry on using the same shops and services – ones that do what I want and can understand what I call Chinese. So we searched over a couple of weekends and decided, in the end, to stay In Weipeng Gardens. The first choice was the 28th floor of Block 3 – slightly larger than my current place and with some nice features, but negotiations…Continue
