With a population of over 13 million in Shenzhen alone, it is surprising that the foreign DJ music scene is still at its early stages. But, it is in good hands with the newest addition of one of the regions most experienced, knowledgeable, and versatile DJ's.
Nimbus was in high-school when he began producing music in his bedroom back in '91 on his Amiga500 computer. His interest in music naturally developed into regular DJ work, and Nimbus quickly became part of the New Zealand dance scene.
Over the following years Nimbus established a name for himself in local bars and clubs and managed to pay his way through his studies in engineering by pleasing crowds with his hard edged commercial mixing style, and introducing a new realm of dance style mixing never before heard in the region.
In 2000 there was an obvious rift between mainstream clubs and underground dance clubs, a huge divide that Nimbus set out to capitalize on. With his ability to combine music into his sets that spanned both the mainstream and the underground, he quickly pioneered a style that attracted clubbers of all types, seeking something new.
With the birth of Altitude – his own concept, a large euro styled semi commercial nightclub, there was only one DJ suited to the job. Playing everything from commercial dance through to hard house, the stage was set for a new era in central North Island clubbing. The unique style of the club opened the door to the growing global scene and Altitude Nightclub hosted some of the biggest guest DJ’s and dance parties of the day.
By 2004 Nimbus set out to spread the sound even further and established residencies at other clubs including Club Roma, Gold Bar and The Buddha Lounge, and continued to develop his sound, while performing across the country. Also he has enjoyed playing in clubs across Australia on his many visits, and his 2 years residence in Queensland while studying music production at SAE music institute.
Over the years the clubs have changed, and so have the people. Nimbus now is more likely to be heard playing dirty electro breaks and progressive tech house sets rather than his older times of hard trance and high energy dance music. Even so, his musical tastes still span many genres, to all extremes, and he is well known for playing outside the expected norm.
This unique style was showcased on his various radio show residencies including “Substance” on The Studio Fm with co-host DJ Static, and “On the Floor” with co-host Sharky, as well as “R18” on BopFM.
Nimbus is a highly technical DJ with a reputation for consistently playing 'the perfect set' and is savvy with all kinds of DJ technology. You might see him mixing from turntables one night and from a laptop on another. After studying music at the SAE institute in Brisbane his understanding and abilities in this field have found him working on large and small projects across Asia. Besides DJing and promoting events, he has been designing sound systems for some of the region’s most prestigious organizations, and DJing for brands such as Voxoa and Skullcandy.
You can catch Nimbus playing at parties and clubs around Shenzhen and Guangdong province most weekends. Keep an eye out for the ‘FRESH CREW’ and ‘FRONTLINE’ parties, and anywhere there is a large crowd of people gathered having a really good time.
