Secret Love

Once I had a secret love
That lived within the heart of me
All too soon my secret love
Became impatient to be free

So I told a friendly star
The way that dreamers often do
Just how wonderful you are
And why I am so in love with you

Now I shout it from the highest hills
Even told the golden daffodils

At last my heart's an open door
And my secret love's no secret anymore

My trip to the United Kingdom (Jan-Feb 2013)

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:30pm 9 Comments

Finally I made it - travelled to the UK again, end of January - beginning of February this year.

I haven't been there for more than 2 years and it was a most welcome visit!

We had both never been to Scotland and it was our major destination on this trip.

What can I say...both William and I were fascinated by this part of the United Kingdom. There is a distinct difference between these two countries that is not clearly understood by someone who has never been to one of…

An Invasion by Cheburashkas in Causeway Bay!

Posted on December 5, 2012 at 2:30am 0 Comments

This is what's happening in Causeway Bay: the place has been literally conquered by Cheburashka displays.

Cheburashka (Чебурашка) is a character from a 1966 children's book by a popular Soviet writer Eduard Uspenskiy and the subsequent 1969 stop-motion cartoon. I was absolutely astonished when I saw that in Hong Kong!!

I never even liked the cartoon...yet, first, the Japanese seemed to have gone mad about Cheburashka and the Co. Now it's Hong Kong's turn...My goodness. Who…

A Repertory Theatre?

Posted on May 16, 2012 at 1:37pm 0 Comments

Lately, I have read about this British director Tom Hopes who is set to establish a repertory theatre in Hong Kong.

There are tens if not hundreds of repertory theatres in Russia and the above-said director was really impressed with them when he visited Russia.

What strikes me is that, apparently, repertory theatres are a rarity in the West....Surprisingly, I never thought so before.

Is your country the same and the concept of a theatre like this does not work…

Hi Carl!

Seems like I can't post on your profile.

No, I've never come across a KTV where there were pinyin rather than Chinese character subtitles.

As for "decent" places, most of those I went to looked reputable. If you want to make sure it's not dodgy just go to Party World. It's a Taiwanese KTV chain; it's very decent if only a little pricey.

Hi Victoria :) I’ve just posted this reply on a very old discussion that you may still be able to help with:

While you were here, did you ever find a good KTV place in Shenzhen that ticked the boxes of a ‘more decent’ singing environment and importantly, pinyin for us non-readers of Chinese characters?

It was pity that I did not make it my last night in St. Petersburg.  My friends told me that it was a touched night with beautiful and cheerful Russian folk songs, respectful artists and audience.

Language won’t be a problem.  We even watched an opera the “Jenufa” in Czech with Russian subtitles. :-)

Yes, I am still in St. Petersburg and will leave for China tomorrow evening.

I am supposed to go to a concert this evening.  Sadly I get a serious cold and have to stay in the apartment and take some rest. :-(

Vic, your country has a lot of amazing palaces, museums, theaters and musical halls.  I am very impressed! :-)

The other day I wrote on most walls and responded to most threads calling everybody an English teacher, just to maintain the overall tone of the website.

It's the closest I get to performance art.
