I'm assuming then that you will want an electric guitar, if Rock is your base format.
If you were thinking more on the folky side of things I would recommend an electric / acoustic. That makes singing alone a lot easier, but doesn't lend itself to doing a lot of shredding. I bought a very nice Ibanez V70 at the instrument mall. It is an acoustic with an electric pickup and may be my favorite playing guitar, possibly with the exception of my Martin. You can check youtube for reviews of the V70. I think you can get one for about 1000RMB. If you want to go solid electric, you probably have a few more choices, but we'd have to evaluate each individually. Global suggestions, stay away from brands like Austin, Indiana, Mitchell or odd sounding Chinese names etc, these are basic beginner or "store" brands in the west and will not have the resale value should you decide to give up the instrument. You can find Ibanez, Dean, and some other international brands in the same general price range and you'll be better served long term. I should be back in country in another month or so and might be able to do a run through the mall with you if you are in no hurry.
