Life comes from life. The universe is a living thing made by love and of love. The earth too as part of the universe is a living thing made of love. We experience her love in the abundance of support she provides us such as the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. And we recognize the divinity of her unconditional love and so call her mother earth or some of us refer to her as goddess. We must recognize as well that we too spring… Continue

Antonius Block: I shall remember this moment: the silence, the twilight, the bowl of strawberries, the bowl of milk. Your faces in the evening light. Mikael asleep, Jof with his lyre. I shall try to remember our talk. I shall carry this memory carefully in my hands as if it were a bowl brimful of fresh milk. It will be a sign to me, and a great sufficiency.
Antonius Block: Nothing escapes you!
Death: Nothing escapes me. No one escapes me.

It happens once in four years. Check the calendar of events on the front page for lots of cool "Leap Day" events.
I'm kind of partial to the "Songs & Poems 4" and "Shenzhen Leaps Forward"
event. (Well, I posted it.)
How does Shenzhen "leap forward"? Anyone who knows me or my Stuff page knows about my website. Tomorrow we unveil it--and Shenzhen will never be the same.

This was one of those big staged official pompous events with tons of Chinese photographers from all the other Shenzhen media - nothing to get excited about as a photographer. However, this time it was a bit different. Tsingdao was apparently a sponsor because everyone in attendance (mostly migrant workers) was provided with free beer. It wasn't long before the other photographers started handing cans of beer to me, and we all started throwing them down… Continue

I've been around Shenzhen a long time, and one of the recurring questions is: Are there opportunities for expats (and locals) to volunteer in Shenzhen?
The perfect volunteer opportunity would be:
--a one-time event (not a long-term commitment)
--at a convenient time (weekends? evenings?)
--less than four hours
--not requiring any special skills or heavy lifting
Do you know of any opportunities like this?
Or ANY… Continue

When I listened to Beethoven’s Pathetique on tonihgt, suddenly I hit upon one song in my head. So soon I hummed following this melody. That is ELO’s Midnight Blue.
This song was announced in Album “Discovery” on 1979. This was remade from the second movement of Beethoven’s piano sonata No.8 in C minor, op. 13 “Pathetique”. Its magnificent and lyric melody gives feeling such as listening to playing well orchestra. Although this was not… Continue

A mother passing by her daughter's bedroom was astonished to see the bed was nicely made and everything was picked up. Then she saw an envelope propped up prominently on the center of the bed. It was addressed, "Mom." With the worst premonition, she opened the envelope and read the letter with trembling hands:
Dear Mom: It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope with my new boyfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with Dad and you. I've been finding… Continue

How many of us who have travelled to China from anywhere else in the world have a horror story or 2 in their history here? I recently helped a very good friend escape China as she was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, literally. She is back home now and feeling fine. Her story is not unique here by any means, and having been here for more than 3 years she felt it was long enough to try and make things better and finally gave up and went home. For those of us still here, we know there are… Continue
