Why I Am Not In Favour of Phonics

Long time, no rant. Haha. It's time for another one!

As I have been working mainly with young children in the past 5 months (oh god), I have noticed that a system of phonics seems to be very popular among schools and training centres here in HK. For those of you who are wondering what the hell phonics are, here is a brief definition:

---------------------------

Phonics refers to a method for teaching speakers of…

Questioning our Culture

I'm always interested in the different ways that we think about certain parts of life in our different cultures.

There are some big differences between Western and Chinese culture that become obvious for anyone that's experienced both cultures first hand. From dating to personal space to manners to family values the differences are vast and truly show how environment shapes our ideas and behaviors.

We should understand that these differences in ideas and…

The Habit

Captains log: star date... oh, sorry wrong blog *ahem* *stands up* "Hi... my name's David and I'm a smoke-aholic" OK, good, step one to any addiction is admitting you have it. So I am a smoker... once again - I smoke. Yes I love those little death sticks. There is nothing I enjoy more (as good sex in China is like... non-existent) than waking up in the morning making that first pot of coffee and lighting up. This is my life…

Ladies & Gentlemen : Tod Browning's Freaks

Freaks is a 1932 American Pre-Code horror film about sideshow performers, directed and produced by Tod Browning and released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, with a cast mostly composed of actual carnival (funfair) performers. The film was based on Tod Robbins' 1923 short story "Spurs". Director Browning took the exceptional step…

A trip to Hong Kong

we all know the story, crossing border, the train ride, the long underground walks, too much mayonaisse in the breakfast bread, the search for pubilc toilets... We've all been there.

But Yesterday something really got me, the hundreds and hundreds of Foreign girls (Not from HK) wandering around the whole city, parks, shopping malls, supermarkets, streets...

I am not complaining, it's just surprinsingly curious. Just in HK!

Nice week
