Drop the last year into the silent limbo of the past. Let it go, for it was imperfect, and thank God that it can go.
We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.

2. The way their heads always find the right spot on our shoulder.
3. How cute they look when they sleep.

One morning I was awakened by a fire alarm and evacuated the building. But the alarm was for the adjacent building in my complex. Smoke was pouring out of the window several stories up and glass littered the sidewalk. Come to find a Chinese woman had committed suicide. She broke a gas pipe in her apt. and burned herself alive because she discovered her husband was having an affair.
Now I live in that same complex. I got in a fight with my previous neighbor and I felt it was in my… Continue

Ever suffer that awkward moment when a roomful of people suddenly want you to get up and dance in front of everybody?
It's happened to me a number of times and depending on my mood I'll either accept or decline. I hate to disappoint, but I can't dance worth a shit.
I'm reminded today of the time I danced in a private KTV room with a bunch of cops. Not female cops. Not male and female cops together. But male cops.
Me, a white guy and about 10 or 11 cops, dancing… Continue

A song for my heart. Aza aza fighting, Isabelle!
Carry You Home by: James Blunt
Trouble is her only friend and he's back again.
Makes her body older than it really is.
She says it's high time she went away,
No one's got much to say in this town.
Trouble is the only way is down.
As strong as you were, tender you go.
I'm watching you breathing for the last time.
A song for your heart, but when it is… Continue

When I first arrived in China I flipped on the T.V and saw a monkey and a pig flying around on clouds. My initial reaction was similar to South Park’s Cartman’s catchphrase: “Seriously, dude, what the fuck?
I had never heard of the Journey West before. A big cultural lag on my part. How did I miss it? I studied classical Lit in school.
I began watching the original TV series (don’t like the spinoffs) and quickly became an addict. It is one of the best fantasy epics ever!… Continue

River was my first Chinese friend. His real name is Mr. He. Which is appropriate: He lives in Qian Wei, a small river town in Sichuan, about a three hour bus ride from Chengdu, the capital city of the Province.
River was the only Chinese person I met in Qian Wei who spoke English well and so let me first say I am indebted to him many times over. Without his help, I never would have survived rural China.
But we had a falling out, I’m afraid. Words were spoken, there were… Continue
