100-year-old tips for writing about controversial topics

By Brad Shorr

He was born in 1874. He was fat, unattractive, disheveled and absent-minded. His ideas were dismissed and often ridiculed by many of the era’s most exalted men and women of letters, science and state. Nevertheless he remained popular with peers and the…

Throw it away

There is a pack of Yellow Cheddar in my fridge, it was never opened.

Yesterday, I tried to make pizza, I took it out and found it was expired.

But it looked so lovely, nice yellow color and it weighs heavy in my hand, I just couldn't throw it away without tasted it.

So, I cut a piece and ate it. It tasted good.

So I added some on pizza.

I got diarrhea this morning. I still feel sick now while waiting for my flight to Chengdu.

Into Darkness

Spring in the 70’s in Germany, a young girl is sitting on an early Saturday afternoon in her parents living room and following on TV Captain Kirk, Mr Spock and Lieutenant Uhura.

Spring 2013 Hong Kong, a mid aged women is sitting in an cold cinema and follows Captain Kirk, Mr Spok and Uhura again, while they are cruising thru the space and saving one more time the earth from the evils.

When I read the announcement that “Star Trek – Into Darkness” is been showing in HKG I…

Just spent an hour watching a soap opera about Chinese special forces...

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm pretty sure in real life CPLASF are badasses, but stupidity of the movie makers is just astounding. Below a couple of my favorites:

Apparently, Chinese marines wear blue uniforms in forest terrain. And just to be sure, that they are clearly visible for miles ahead, they have huge red Chinese flags waving above them.

Ground forces are a bit more subtle in disclosing their whereabouts: since their camo is digitlized green and hides them well, they…

I deserve it!

After many years of training, running, sweating, tears and pain I finally got my first trophy for a 3rd place in my age group, for a 65 km trail run in Hong Kong.

I’m proud and looking forward to my next 72.7 km in Germany.…

You deserve

Often hear other people tell me, you deserve a good guy.

I would say a good guy is a bonus to my life. Do I deserve it? I don't know, I will know in the future.

For now, I don't think life owes me anything, but I do think I deserve a life without struggling. And I think everyone deserves it.

Why I came to China: Part2

Alright, part TWO!

So, the second of three reasons why I didn't come to China:

I'm not running away from anything.

Last year, one of my middle school students-a girl about 10 years old with great English-asked me, completely straightfaced "Teacher, why did you flee from…

A Dramatic Evening

An evening with happiness, then anger, then violence, then calmness, then peace, then happiness again, then playful night, and then remorse.

When you have a fair heart, then everything seems to be so easy, as nothing would evoke any feelings except stark-naked and cold analysis. Somehow, everyone has a damaged scaled for certain things. You read a bigger number this time, and a smaller number next time, or far beyond the correct number, even though,it is always the same weight. You've…

Draft rules target expats’ illegal presence

Dance like no one is watching

We always convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another.

Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are.

After that we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with.

We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.

We always tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her…
