Fake race numbers, imposters and those cutting corners to face penalties, including lifetime bans

Someone asked me if it was possible to TWOV through Shenzhen Airport (SZX). I looked it up on TIMATIC which is the official IATA website that airline check-in personnel use to decide if someone has the right bits of paper to be allowed on their flight. There are many sorts of TWOV - you can stay in Beijing or Shanghai for six days without a visa, Guangzhou and bunch of other cities for three days. There is also…Continue

SHENZHEN has officially won the status of a National Forest City after meeting the 40 requirements for the title, according to a national seminar on the construction of China's forest cities held in the city yesterday.
A National Forest City refers to a city whose urban ecological system is mainly forests that meet the forest standards set by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration.
Who'd a thunk it?

I took the train from Futian Station to West Kowloon and back yesterday, just to see what it was like and to stock up on Marks & Spencer’s pork pies for the holiday. It costs 68rmb each way and takes about 15 minutes in the train. The stations are big so there’s quite a lot of walking involved, getting to the station and within it. Both sets of Immigration are in West Kowloon station and I was through mostly quickly, but not any faster than at Luohu/Lo Wu - probably slower because of the…Continue

Well we did it. Just me and the boy so virtually no Chinese ability, but armed with WeChat and DiDi, we toured China for 25 days using only trains for long-distance travel. So:
Shenzhen to Shanghai by sleeper train
Shanghai to Tai'an to see Taishan
Tai'an to Beijing for all sorts of things
Beijing to Zhengzhou for Yuntaishan and Songshan
Zhengzhou to Guiyang to Anshun for Huangguoshu
Anshun to Zunyi for the Meeting Place where Zhou and Mao took over…Continue

If you are a foreigner and staying in someone's apartment in China, you are supposed to register with the police/PSB within 24 hours of your arrival. If you are a resident who has a friend staying you need to tell them this. My son arrived a month ago and I wanted to register him.
It's a pain going to the police station and going through this procedure so many avoid it and do not register. However, now the…Continue
In Shenzhen it's very unusual to have problems finding a taxi, but on our recent trip things were different. In Beijing you can stand waiting and watching those empty taxis zoom past because they're already answering a call. It was the same in Zhengzhou, Guiyang and a bunch of other cities.
So, if you're going to travel get DiDi on your phone, and if, like me, you can't read Chinese then get the English language version. Just search and find it. If you don't have a card linked…Continue

We're returning to Shenzhen today from our last stop at Zunyi, Guizhou. That's the site of the party meeting in 1935 where Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong took over the running of the PLA. It marks a major decline in Russian influence and is extremely important. It looks like this:
If you turn round and…Continue

So today I've been up Song Shan in Henan, being my fifth great mountain. I started on this in 2013 with Hua Shan in Shaanxi, which is still my favourite of the five. Later that year dropped by Heng Shan in Hunan on the way to Zhangjiajie. A gap then to 2016 with the Heng Shan in Shanxi. Then…Continue

One of the most famous SZStuff photos, with over 500 views and it used to have over fifty comments. Now it looks like I'm talking to myself.
A long-term friend was going to Beihai last weekend, so she went and had a look for it.…Continue
I have loaded enough photos of this trip, and then I will carry on and add photos from the earlier Silk Road trip, the Shanxi trip and Anhui trip. To view them in chronological order it is:
A Chinese company offering sex dolls for rent has withdrawn its services just days after launching.
Touch had begun offering five different sex doll types for daily or…Continue
On our recent trip my son was teaching our companion how to sand slide. She was holding the camera. It got dropped. Fine sand was everywhere and it was making most uncameralike grinding noises when zoomed. I thought I could get it fixed here, but I had to take it to HK.
They inspected it and said it…Continue
A few favourite quotes:

So, in preparation for my Silk Road trip, I've been learning to pronounce the places better. What I called Kashgar as a boy should really be Kashi, similarly Urumqi should be Wulumuqi and Turpan Tulufan.
Then today we has an Uyghur driver and asked him about the names and he rolled of Kashgar, Urumqi and Turpan. So it's all a problem with Han Chinese being unable to pronounce the words, and not my problem.
Or is it the other way? Money goes round the World?
Mine has or will do so. I've worked for an American company for much of my life and built up a fairly substantial pension fund. According to the rules of the fund I must make annual withdrawals, starting from 2014 when I was 67. The pension company, Fidelity, are based in Boston. They have some inconvenient rules for foreigners such as myself. They will only communicate by phone, not email. They will only do a bank transfer of money…Continue
We must all do our bit towards reducing our carbon footprint, and yesterday I found out what my company's contribution seems to be. I am having problems drawing from my US pension fund and needed to call the UK yesterday while at the same time accessing files on my computer. So I got to the office at 3pm to find my phone was dead. I tried the receptionist phone, tyhe head of office phone - all dead. Then I wandered around for 15 minutes looking for a likely place to make them undead. I found…Continue
