As a writer, I am scrupulous about stealing ideas from others.

Unless I have a good reason.

The March issue of ThatsPRD has a nice article on the work of The Red Cross Society of China in helping victims of last month's weather disasters.

So I stole the idea and found the Red Cross China website. (And it's in English.)

Printed there (as well as in Thats) is the bank account number for those who would like to make contributions.

I myself was merely inconvenienced by the bad weather; a commute from Jiangsu province that usually takes under 7 hours took me over 24. But I was one of the lucky ones: I made it home for the holidays.

If you're grateful (like I am) maybe you, too, could give a little bit. It's easy enough. If you're in China, just walk into the ICBC and fill in a deposit slip:

BENEFICIARY'S RMB ACCOUNT NUMBER: 0200001009014413252

BENEFICIARY'S NAME: RED CROSS SOCIETY OF CHINA

If you're NOT in China, you can send an international transfer:

BENEFICIARY'S NAME: RED CROSS SOCIETY OF CHINA
INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL BANK OF CHINA,
BEIJING MUNICIPAL BRANCH
SWTFT CODE: ICBKCNBJBJM
CHIPS UID:319913

Other contact info:
TEL NUMBER:(8610)84025890
FAX NUMBER:(8610)64060566
ADDRESS: BEIJING,CHINA,100007
WEBSITE: WWW.REDCROSS.ORG.CN
E-MAIL: RCSC@CHINESEREDCROSS.ORG.CN

Still not convinced? Read more about the long-term effects of the storm, including this:

"The snow and icy weather in parts of south and central China since the beginning of the year have killed 107 people and caused 111.1 billion yuan (15.4 billion US dollars) in damages.

"The weather has affected 21 of China's provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, with month-long snow and ice in the worst affected areas."

Cash donations are requested because of the difficulty of transporting goods long distances in the ravaged areas.

An earlier article describes the urgent need for "food, medicine, quilts, winter coats and other supplies..."

Any volunteers?

A very worthy project, James. I'll set the ball rolling. Who will help keep it going?
