The girlfriend and I arrived in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon from Bangkok. First time for her and the second one for me, so knowing how to move around and get to places was quite helpful this time, compared to my virgin trip flying solo. The first impression you get as you are landing and traversing from the airport to downtown is how green it is. The second noticeable thing is how clean it is and finally, how they have invested a massive amount of money into this city to make it a true worldly city. Everything one could possibly want can be found here, no matter if your from the USA, the UK, Russia or even Africa. Being a good old American boy, the massive amount of restaurants is mind boggling, not to mention the amount of American restaurants and fast food joints. The shopping will blow your mind. Only con seen so far; the taxis say they are fully metered and no haggling on prices (printed directly on the taxi doors), but you will be hard pressed to find one that will actually use a meter, though 10-20 MYR is not overly bad. FYI: You have to buy a taxi coupon if using one at KL Sentral.
My first trip here, I assumed Air Asia would take care of me so booked all they had to offer including a room at the Tunes Hotel downtown........Probably one of the top 3 WORST hotels I've ever stayed at. This time I was wise to it and booked a room at a great hotel that's not much more than the Tunes and includes in the price; air conditioning, massive room, king sized bed with, count it....5 pillows, blasting hot and powerful stream of water, towels, fridge, cable TV and free internet. Just to rephrase it, Tunes Hotel in downtown KL sucks and better finds can be found on agoda or asiarooms.
Tomorrow we are off to a few wholesale places to make some purchases for the biz and the rest of the day for sightseeing. If you are considering a little holiday, consider KL and you won't be disappointed. Most tourists, like Americans, can enter the country without a visa and the immigration and customs lines are amazingly fast.
I know that the ProfanePenguine likes to tout KL and I have to agree with him 100%.

Comment by Profanipenguin on January 8, 2013 at 9:02pm I do absolutely fucking love KL. The best city in Asia. It's interesting (unlike Singapore), it's properly multi-cultural (unlike Bangkok), it's reasonably priced (unlike Hong Kong), there's tons to see and do (unlike Siem Reap in fairness) and the people are pleasant too. Glad you're having a good time chap. Drop me a PM when you decide to visit SR and we'll go for a few beers. For some reason I couldn't respond to your message on my own blog...
Comment by Cynic The Troll on January 8, 2013 at 9:08am @Praveen, the only wholesale market I ended up going to was Plaza GM since they had exactly what I was looking for, 8 floors of clothing, jewelry and accessories. I did buy a new phone in KL at Time Square shopping mall which was cheaper than BKK at 1300 MYR.
Comment by Roger on January 6, 2013 at 7:55pm Great place to visit, and not a bad place to live either though I did find it a bit sedate at times...

Comment by Filthy Lucre on January 6, 2013 at 12:06pm If you've got an extra day try Genting Highlands. It's a large casino and indoor/outdoor park with rides, restaurants, stores, live entertainment, etc. on top of a mountain. We booked a car and stopped at 5-6 tourist places on the way. I forget what it cost, but it wasn't much. Beautiful drive in the mountains.

Comment by Zen on my back on January 6, 2013 at 11:37am I've planned to pay KL a visit by next summer and since I'm working on my next step after China, I might consider it as an option. Time will tell.
