It stars Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, and Renée Zellweger in leading roles.

It tells a story of a deserter from army during American Civial War who was on his way to his beloved girl.

On one hand, it questions the meaning of the war and reveals cruel and inhumane behaviors of both sides including killing, robbery and rape; On the other hand, it pays tribute to all the goodness of mankind in hard time, such as neighborhood watch; kind-hearted young single mother providing food and accomodation to the deserter in a dark rainy night and the other day the deserter protecting the young mother from robbery and rape; courage to fight with villains to protect beloved ones and also the steadfast love.

Like many other wars, can American Civil War be avoided?  If yes, how?  This makes me think of current tension over Diao Yu Island.  It is so complicated that only someone as wise as Deng can handle it well to avoid the escalation of conflict.  However, so far I have not seen someone like him.  I only wish all lands could enjoy the peace like Newzeland.

About the steadfast love, it always has the fatal attraction to me but I have no idea how to make it.

Jude Law as usual successfully shaped the image of a man with inner strength and deep love through few words and brave act.  He is one of my favorite actors.  I had watched My Blue Berry Nights and Breaking and Entering before in which he took a leading role.  Both are also good films.

Nicole Kidman’s starring as Ada, Inman’s love, was a middling performance. Renee Zellweger as Ruby, a girl who works on Ada’s farm after her father’s death and Natalie Portman as Sara, a widowed woman who lives on with her infant son, vividly played their respective roles.  They both had a much better performance than Nicole Kidman.

I think that's what it is unique in. :-)

I suppose so.

I don't know much about wars or the military but it must take courage to go AWOL, even more so in a pointless, avoidable war.

@Kev, I agree most of its plots are contrived and cliche-ridden.  However, it thinks high of a deserter. This may be a new angle of the American Civil War, isn't it?

There is still argument that if slavery ever existed in China.

I didn't like it. It was like an all-out assault on the Oscars, contrived and cliche-ridden.

Oh, I may be wrong.

But the abolishment of slavery in China was also through rebel not peaceful way.

Almost every country in the world at one point in it's history tolerated slavery in one form or another.  Today no civilized nation has legal slavery.  The Southern States would have eventually abolished slavery the same as did Greece, England, France, Turkey, China etc.

@ Heather Cai, it is just a film I watched today.  I can't say I love it.

@GrandPa, I may also give it a C because it is prolonged and depressive.  However, I thought this may be what the film wants us to experience, the war itself was prolonged and depressive.

If as you said, there would have been no Civil War, how about the status of slave?  Should they be set free?  Would the South nation itself set them free?

Comment by GrandPa on September 15, 2012 at 11:00pm

I would give the movie a C minus.  It was tolerable and no more, but you asked a question that interests me.

Like many other wars, can American Civil War be avoided?  If yes, how?

The war could have been easily avoided.  If the North had not invaded the South there would have been no war.  If the North had allowed the South to form it's own nation, which it had (and still does) every right to do, then there would have been no war.  The Civil War was an act of aggression by the North.
