It has always been part of the human condition. Wherever you find yourself, there are

always those presuming to know what's best for you. But then how does one set out to

change or confront mindsets of interference in others' harmless pursuits of happiness,

others' aspirations—willful violations of basic dignity? Because even those who live

their lives according to the proposition, “I'm simple, why does everything else

have to be complicated?” or “I just want a simple life” occasionally discover

through harsh reality, the essence of the ancient Egyptian proverb, “Peace

is the fruit of activity, not of sleep.” In order to attain the happiness &

peace from living a 'simple life' that Mildred & Richard Loving longed

for, they had to stand and fight miscegenation laws and specifically,

Virginia State code affirming: “If any white person and colored

person shall go out of this State, for the purpose of being mar

-ried, and with the intention of returning, and be married...

and afterwards return...and reside in it, cohabiting as man

and wife, they shall be punished...The fact of their coha

-habitation here as man and wife shall be evidence of

their marriage.” Sure, the couple who grew up south

-east of Fredericksburg in Caroline County marrying

in 1958 when Mildred was 18 and Richard was 24,

could've decided it wasn't worth the pain after

coming to grips with the impact of racism &

prejudice on their quest for simplicity. As

Mrs. Loving later said, “I knew that, but

I didn’t realize how bad it was until

we got married.” They took their

case all the way to the Supreme

Court and changed America,
