Shenzhen Stuff

Yesterday I travelled to Shouning in Fujian Province, via Shenzhen's new air terminal, Fuzhou airport and Ningde South Bus Station.  Every step took me back in time.

It's -2C outside but a toasty +15C in my room with the heating full on.  For the first time I remember I'm using those dressing gowns and slippers they give you in these places.  One nice touch from the hotel was the roses on the bed.  I guess they assumed that the person who booked the room would be keeping me warm.  Anyway, they used her ID Card to sign me in because it was too much of a pain to check in a foreigner.

Today we head up into the mountains - wish me luck again.

Yes - I paid the fares and if we were visiting their hometown then I only needed to pay for one hotel room as they could stay with family. They are all people that I know well and they like to show off their origins. There has usually been some other motive as well - with the Guangxi girl I was hiring a car/driver and it was the only way she could get home for Spring Festival, in Fujian the girl wanted to go back to get a passport, in Shaanxi the girl wanted help to bring her new baby back to SZ as her husband was too busy, etc.

I have been travelling all my life. Around Europe when young, then to Hong Kong for a job when I was 26, followed by Africa, South America, etc. I enjoy it and I enjoy China. Many people like to show their home town and origins. I will keep travelling, but it's not for everyone.

It's lucky you're not interested in travelling. In England we don't have ID Cards and people don't need passports to check into hotels. So I guess that many people get chopped up every day. So many that it's no longer news so the newspapers don't report it.

You think many foreign criminals go to Shouning? I doubt many Chinese criminals would go there either, as it is a poor town. And Chinese would have to use their ID Card. They just were lazy about going to the police station to register me.

I stayed there with no problems. The photos from that trip are here.

@Charles - I've spent about 25 winters in HK or SZ and there's been a lot of variation.

@Miss X - My hotel has heating but not too effective. In home town Heather gets to stay with her uncles and they don't.  We visited some of the villages and towns in the valleys.  The villages are dying - many empty houses and only old people looking after grandchildren. This is the most remote area I've visited in China and that's after they have built the roads. Pics and blogs later.

@Rob and Torres - after the first mountain range which got really cold we were mostly in valleys that seemed warmer that Shouning itself.
