My friend asked me some tips about travelling in Yunnan, especially the beautiful Lugu lake. I was doing the summary for him, then my handmade scarves which I bought from Mosuo brought back some memory.
The beautiful view wasn't the only reason attract me to go there, also the Mosuo culture made me take that adventure. The Women's Kingdom exists there.
The women of the Mosuo's agricultural villages head the households, make business decisions, and own property, which they pass on to their matrilineal heirs. In the unique Mosuo tradition called the walking marriage, women invite men to visit their rooms at night—and to leave in the morning. Women may also change partners as often as they like, and promiscuity carries no social stigma.(don't you think the world suppose to work this way ;p)
They are a society that we know hasn't had marriage for a thousand years, and they've been able to raise kids successfully. Extended families of siblings, uncles, aunts, and others are said to be extremely stable, Lombard added. For example, there are no divorces to destabilize the families. And even the death of a child's biological father has little effect on the family, given the father's distance from the family and the extensive support network in the household.
Well, even some people use the walking marriages as an excuse to rape women tourists there, I still respect Mosuo's life style, its culture lasts for a thousand years already show people its value.
Hope this July I will have one more interesting trip in Europe.

Comment by GrandPa on January 28, 2012 at 8:35pm There are many ways to organize society. I respect them also. The concept of extended families is excellent and is I believe seen in many different types of societies.
There is only one problem...I would never get an invite! ;-)
