What to make a good boss and good employees

The other day, I had lunch with a few colleagues near my school,including my boss. Then I had the chance to talk with him during lunch.

I teased him by saying that "I feel proud of myself today, coz I can buy my boss lunch." He asked me with a grin," Do you want to be proud of yourself everyday? Then just buy me lunch every day, later on, you become my boss." I replied, "wow,it sounds like a good idea! "

Then I diverted our topic. ( I am always good at that) "why you don't ask me: what to make a good employee? ". Before he answered, I blurted out something just occurred to me at that moment: A. ability to learn, fast learner; B. always have good ideas to work, need no instruction or guiding from the boss.In other word, they have their impetus to work, and their own value means more than others.( I felt tired just after class and what came to my mind directly only the two). He kept smiling,"when I was working in the training centre, I always had written planns for the next 6 months, and my boss felt pleasant to read! "....

Then I was being a bit more aggressive, "but how come you did not ask me what to make a good boss?"

He should not have predicted some question like that. Before he told me his idea, I began mine again,"the most important one is he or she has got to listen to the subordinates, he or she may not take all opinions in, but at least he or she has to listen to their voice"...

Well, I am always the one who speaks my mind when I feel the need to. I did email my boss or some other high position persons in my company with my ideas on some issue and plans. In fact, he appreciated that. So I do take him as a very charismatic boss.

I'd love to hear what you think to make a good boss and the employees. Thanks for your ideas in advance!

@wandering cat,your words are simple but good points.

@Dario Silva,wow, sounds like you are a good boss yourself? I like your ideas of being a good boss.

@Grandpa, as I said, I was tired and I could not really think of any better ideas. But your point of view reminds of another thing. We said 领袖 (lingxiu) and 领导 (lingdao)。 lingxiu is someone like Chairman Mao, he was really powerful, talent, influential and charismatic; but lingdao is only the head, they are lower level of leader. Appreciate your point of view. Thanks!

A good boss is someone who gives me a big fat bonus for every single idea I can come up with as a result of thinking which some supposedly qualified hundreds can't or simply won't do.

A good employee is someone who doesn't sit on their asses like zombies or robots doing online shopping the whole day and complaining how their salaries are so low.

I do not like the term "boss" but since you have used it I will reference it.  I do not think much of the management style of the "great boss" you describe. 

A "boss" is many different things to may different people in many different situations, but in his heart he must be a strong willed leader who is sure of his convictions.

A "boss" is similar to a captain of a ship in a storm, he or she needs to take control and of the ship turn, to the crew and say "quite down, I know what I am doing and where we are going, if everyone does exactly as I tell them we will all get through this alive."

There are appropriate situations and times for ideas from workers to be shared with management, but in general a great "boss" already has a plan, knows how to accomplish it and is using the workers as tools to achieve it.

A great worker is one who can accomplish the tasks given to them quicker and better then his manager needs to fulfill their plan.  A great worker is one that recognizes that they are not the leader and takes pride in following the lead management has given them and in achieving their tasks.

A good boss:

1. Is the one who realizes that the company succeeds trough his employees efforts.

2. Delegates responsibilities trusting his employees.

3. Shows appreciation by doing something for his employees.

4. Is an effective listener.

As for an employee, it depends on the organization you are working, the market, and several other factors.

I am going to be another employee and see another boss. Whether I am good one or not, time and money will tell; whether he is a good boss or not, time and money will reflect the answer. ...
